We are committed to providing the best quality services with the resources available and ensuring public money is spent effectively and wisely. We believe this can only be achieved with a skilled and engaged workforce. Therefore, we have devised a comprehensive rewards package, and a commitment to training and development, for all of our staff members.

Agile working policy

We are proud of being an agile employer, supporting a wide range of ways of working which benefit both employees and the council including part-time working, remote working, job share/split, compressed hours, annualised hours, flexitime, extended leave breaks and additional annual leave.

Flexitime working

We recognise that the standard ‘9 to 5’ does not always work for our employees due to its inflexibility, which is why we offer a degree of choice as to when employees work their contracted hours through flexitime.

This enables start and finish times to be varied with prior agreement from management, within set guidelines.

Employees can also accumulate credit which can be used for longer breaks, shorter days or up to 13 days additional leave per year.

Annual incremental salary rises

We offer attractive salaries, and every position has a pay grade range.

This means employees can rise incrementally after being with us for 6 months, then annually thereafter until the top of the salary grade is reached.

Generous holiday allowance

We know it’s important to play hard as well as work hard, which is why we offer 25 days annual leave to all employees (pro-rata for part time contracts).

Yet we don’t stop there; we increase this to 30 days after 5 years continuous service, and to 31 days after 10 years continuous service.

You will also get bank holidays and an extra statutory day at Christmas, and if you’re part-time and these do not fall on your working day, we give you the time to take elsewhere.

Local Government Pension Scheme

It is vital to us that our employees have a decent pension to look forward to when they retire.

Therefore, all employees, except those employed on a casual basis and those on fixed term contracts for a period shorter than three months, will automatically be brought into the Local Government Pension Scheme.

Commitment to employee wellbeing

We are committed to ensuring the wellbeing of all our employees and improving lives, for we cannot expect our employees to look after our Borough without taking care of them. This has led us to being awarded the Workplace Wellbeing Charter.

It is due to this commitment that we offer mini health MOTs and flu jabs annually to all staff and give support towards eyesight tests for users of visual display units.

We also provide confidential access to external counselling services and Occupational Health specialists as staff require.

Carbon efficient travel

We are continually seeking to improve our environmental performance, and we have, therefore, installed electric car charging points in our free staff car park at Tewkesbury Borough Council.

We also operate a pool car scheme, through Enterprise, for any travel required as part of council duties to save employees using their personal vehicles, and to further ensure carbon-efficient methods of travel.

Discounted leisure centre membership

Our dedication to employee wellbeing is not limited to the time our employees are “in the office”.

We understand the positive physical and mental impact of exercise and we have, therefore, established an agreement with Tewkesbury Leisure Centre (Places for People), so all our employees have access to up to 20% off annual membership rates.

Salary Sacrifice Car Scheme

TBC has partnered with Tusker Cars to offer staff a salary sacrifice car scheme giving employees the ability to lease a brand new electric or hybrid vehicle. Employees make savings as the monthly amount is deducted from salary before tax and NI deductions making leasing a low emission car more affordable and simple to budget for with a fixed monthly amount and no deposit. It offers trouble free motoring with insurance, breakdown and servicing and maintenance included.

Our salary sacrifice car scheme helps staff commit to TBC’s carbon reduction programme and gives staff a large choice on carbon efficient vehicles therefore helping to make greener, environmentally friendly lifestyle choices possible. By choosing a low emission car through a company car scheme you also benefit from lowest levels of company car tax.

Training and development

We recognise the importance of training and education for our employees; therefore, we commit to training being a continuing process, taking place at any level in any job, and at any stage of an individual's career. For more information, please visit our developing you page.

Cycle to work scheme

Further to our commitment to our employees general wellbeing and our support for positive mental and physical health, TBC has partnered with Cyclescheme to offer staff access to the governments bike to work scheme, whereby as a council employee, you will be able to hire then purchase a bike by agreeing to give up part of your salary before tax in exchange for this benefit.

This allows you to spread the cost of a new bike whilst also saving on Tax and National Insurance payments as well as making healthy travel choices and protecting the environment. The scheme offers more carbon efficient methods of transport and helps make healthy, eco friendly choices affordable for our staff.

The council is a fantastic place to work, and we are committed to leading a healthy and happy workforce. Because we value all employees both long-serving and new, you will gain access to our comprehensive benefits package from day one.
